Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding things your body will ever do. Here's why pregnancy massage isn't a luxury — it's genuine therapeutic support.

Somewhere along the way, pregnancy massage got filed under "nice treat." A special occasion thing. Something you book for a birthday or before the baby arrives, if someone buys you a voucher.

I want to talk about why that framing is wrong — and why, if you're pregnant, having regular bodywork is one of the most genuinely supportive things you can do for your physical and emotional health right now.

Your Body is Working Harder Than It Ever Has

Even if pregnancy feels "easy" — even if you're not in significant pain, not struggling to walk, not waking up at 3am unable to get comfortable — your body is doing something extraordinary. Every single system is working differently. Your cardiovascular system is pumping significantly more blood. Your ligaments are softening and loosening under the influence of the hormone relaxin. Your centre of gravity is shifting week by week. Your diaphragm is being pushed upward. Your organs are being displaced. Your pelvis is bearing weight it has never borne before.

And layered on top of all of that is everything else — the emotional weight of what's coming, the disrupted sleep, the mental load of preparing for a completely new life.

Your body is holding an enormous amount. Massage is one of the few things that genuinely helps it do that better.

What Prenatal Massage Actually Does

When I work with pregnant clients, I'm not just rubbing sore muscles. I'm working with the whole picture of what their body is managing.

Back, hip and pelvic pain are among the most common complaints in pregnancy — often caused by postural shifts as the belly grows and the pelvis tilts forward, combined with the loosening effects of relaxin on the joints. Skilled hands-on work can release the tension patterns causing this pain in a way that no amount of resting or paracetamol really touches.

Sciatic pain affects a huge number of pregnant women, particularly in the second and third trimester. As the baby grows and the uterus presses on surrounding structures, the sciatic nerve can become compressed. Releasing the piriformis muscle and working along the gluteal area and hamstrings can bring significant, sometimes immediate relief.

Oedema — swelling in the legs, feet and ankles — is another incredibly common pregnancy complaint, particularly in the third trimester. Gentle lymphatic drainage work helps move excess fluid, reduce heaviness and discomfort, and support the lymphatic system in doing its job. Many of my clients notice a visible difference after a single session.

The nervous system is something I pay a lot of attention to in pregnancy work. When your body is stressed — and pregnancy is physiologically stressful, regardless of how much you're looking forward to it — it produces cortisol. High cortisol levels throughout pregnancy have been associated with poorer outcomes for both mother and baby. Massage has a well-documented effect on the nervous system, helping shift the body from a sympathetic (fight or flight) state into a parasympathetic (rest and recover) state. That's not a small thing. That's your body being given permission to exhale.

Sleep tends to suffer in pregnancy for obvious physical reasons, but also because of heightened anxiety. Regular massage helps regulate the nervous system and — through the release of serotonin and melatonin — can genuinely improve sleep quality.

It's Also About You

Here's something that doesn't get said enough. When you're pregnant, a lot of the focus shifts. Every question, every appointment, every conversation tends to be about the baby. Which is completely understandable. But you are also in that equation. Your wellbeing matters — not just instrumentally, as something that affects the baby, but in its own right.

A massage session is an hour where someone is paying full, skilled attention to your body and how it's feeling. Where you don't have to be doing anything. Where the focus is entirely on you. A lot of my pregnant clients tell me that's one of the things they value most — more than they expected.

When to Start

Prenatal massage is generally considered safe from 12 weeks onwards, once the risk of miscarriage is significantly lower and the pregnancy is more established. The first trimester is a time to be cautious — the body is going through enormous early changes and many women feel very nauseous during this period.

From 12 weeks, monthly sessions are a great rhythm to aim for. In the third trimester, many of my clients come more frequently — every two to three weeks — as the physical demands increase and the body really starts to benefit from consistent support.

What to Look For in a Pregnancy Massage Therapist

Not all massage is suitable during pregnancy, and not all therapists have the training to work safely with pregnant clients. Look for someone with specific pregnancy massage training who understands the contraindications — things like pre-eclampsia, placenta praevia, and blood clotting disorders that mean massage is not appropriate, or needs to be adapted.

A good pregnancy massage therapist will take a full consultation before your first session, adapt their work to your stage of pregnancy and your individual symptoms, and know how to position you comfortably and safely.
