Yoga in the Workplace: Why Your Team Needs Movement, Breathing & Moments of Calm
How many hours does your team spend sitting down?
At a desk.
Looking at a screen.
Driving.
In meetings.
On Teams.
Answering emails.
Then somebody gets home at the end of the day wondering why their neck feels stiff, their shoulders feel tight and their brain feels exhausted.
Modern work can involve a lot of sitting and an enormous amount of mental stimulation.
That's why I think workplace wellbeing needs to include something incredibly simple:
Movement.
What Is Workplace Yoga?
Corporate yoga doesn't have to mean turning your boardroom into an advanced yoga studio.
Workplace yoga can be adapted completely around the team.
It might include:
Gentle stretching
Mobility
Breathing exercises
Standing yoga
Chair yoga
Mindfulness
Relaxation
Simple yoga postures
Employees don't necessarily need to change clothes or have previous experience.
The objective isn't to see who can perform the most impressive pose.
It's to give people an opportunity to step away from work, move their body and reset their attention.
Why Movement During the Working Day Matters
Our bodies are designed to move.
Yet many jobs require us to spend long periods in relatively static positions.
Then there's the mental side of work.
Emails.
Notifications.
Meetings.
Targets.
Deadlines.
Phone calls.
Sometimes even our lunch breaks involve staring at another screen.
A workplace yoga session interrupts that pattern.
For a short period, employees are encouraged to stop looking outward and bring their attention back towards themselves.
What Does Research Say About Workplace Yoga?
There is research specifically examining yoga delivered inside workplaces.
A systematic review and meta-analysis examined six workplace yoga studies involving 266 employees participating in yoga compared with 221 people in control groups.
The analysis found workplace yoga interventions were associated with reductions in perceived stress compared with no treatment.
The researchers also noted limitations and said higher-quality research is needed.
Another systematic review of randomised controlled trials concluded that workplace yoga appeared to have a positive effect on employee health, particularly stress, while again highlighting the need for larger studies.
So we shouldn't promise an employer:
"One yoga class will eliminate workplace stress."
It won't.
But there is evidence supporting something much more realistic:
Yoga can be a useful component of workplace wellbeing.
Workplace Yoga Isn't a Fix for a Bad Workplace
This is important.
No amount of yoga will compensate for impossible workloads, bullying, poor management or an unhealthy workplace culture.
Employee wellbeing has to go deeper than offering a yoga class and expecting employees to cope with everything else.
But within a genuinely supportive workplace, wellbeing activities can create opportunities for employees to take care of themselves during the working day.
And sometimes organisations need to do more than send an email saying:
"Remember to look after your wellbeing."
Give people the actual time and space to do it.
You Don't Need a Flexible Workforce!
Whenever I mention yoga, somebody inevitably says:
"You wouldn't get me doing that — I can't even touch my toes."
Perfect.
You don't need to.
Corporate yoga should be inclusive.
I can adapt sessions depending on your workforce, available space and what you're trying to achieve.
Nobody needs to perform.
Nobody needs to compete.
And nobody should feel embarrassed because their body moves differently from somebody else's.
Movement + Massage + Stillness
This is why yoga works so beautifully within a complete LUCEZEN Corporate Wellness Day.
I can bring three different wellbeing experiences into your workplace:
WORKPLACE YOGA
Movement, stretching, breathing and mindfulness.
CORPORATE CHAIR MASSAGE
Individual massage appointments focusing particularly on areas that commonly feel tense during desk-based work, including the back, neck and shoulders.
SOUND HEALING
A group crystal singing bowl sound bath offering a completely different experience centred around stillness and relaxation.
Movement.
Touch.
Stillness.
Your wellness day can incorporate one service or combine all three.
Workplace Wellbeing Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
You don't necessarily need an enormous wellbeing budget or an entire day away from work.
Sessions can be designed around your organisation.
Perhaps your team starts the morning with yoga.
Employees receive chair massage appointments throughout the afternoon.
Then everybody finishes with a sound bath.
Or perhaps you simply book a regular yoga session.
The point is to make wellbeing actually fit into working life.

Bring Movement Into Your Working Day
We spend so much time asking employees to concentrate.
Perform.
Produce.
Meet targets.
Solve problems.
Sometimes one of the most useful things we can do is create a small space in that working day where none of those things are required.
Move.
Stretch.
Breathe.
Reset.
Then continue with the day.
Sometimes workplace wellbeing can really be that simple.
