Sound Healing & Sound Baths in Bradford: What Is Sound Healing and How Does It Work?

There is something about sound that can completely change how we feel.

A song can give you goosebumps. The sound of rain can make you sleepy. Certain music can bring back memories instantly. And sometimes, simply closing your eyes and listening can help you switch off from everything going on around you.

Sound healing works with that connection between sound, the body and the mind.

At LUCEZEN, I use crystal singing bowls and sound healing techniques to create deeply relaxing sound experiences where you don't have to do anything.

You simply get comfortable, close your eyes and allow yourself to listen.

For people who find traditional meditation difficult because their mind won't stop thinking, a sound bath can be a beautiful way of finding stillness without trying to force the mind to be quiet.

What Is Sound Healing?

Sound healing is a holistic wellbeing practice that uses sound and vibration to create an environment that encourages relaxation, mindfulness and rest.

During a sound healing session or sound bath, different instruments can be played around the room to create layers of sound.

At LUCEZEN, one of the main instruments I work with is crystal singing bowls.

When played, the bowls produce long, resonant tones that overlap and gradually fade into one another.

Rather than listening to a melody in the way you would listen to a song, you're surrounded by the sound.

This is where the term "sound bath" comes from — you're essentially being immersed or "bathed" in sound.

What Happens During a Sound Bath?

One of my favourite things about sound healing is how little is expected of you.

You don't need to be flexible.

You don't need to understand meditation.

You don't need to be spiritual.

And you don't need to know anything about sound healing beforehand.

You normally lie comfortably on a mat, get warm and settled and close your eyes.

I'll then guide you into the session before beginning to play the crystal singing bowls.

Different tones and vibrations gradually fill the room while you simply listen.

Some people become incredibly relaxed. Some feel almost as though they're drifting between being awake and asleep. Others notice their thoughts begin to slow down.

And sometimes people simply enjoy lying still for a while without their phone, emails, conversations or anything else demanding their attention.

There isn't a "correct" way to experience a sound bath.

Why Can Sound Feel So Relaxing?

Our brains are constantly processing sound.

Even when we're not consciously paying attention, the nervous system is responding to what's happening around us.

Think about how differently your body reacts to a sudden alarm compared with gentle rainfall or calming music.

Sound can influence how alert or relaxed we feel.

Research into singing bowls is still developing, but studies have reported changes associated with relaxation following singing-bowl sessions, including reductions in self-reported tension and anxiety and changes in measures such as heart rate and heart-rate variability.

Sound healing should therefore be viewed as a complementary wellbeing and relaxation practice, rather than a treatment or cure for a medical condition.

Sound Healing & The Nervous System

Modern life gives us very little opportunity to genuinely switch off.

Phones, notifications, work, family life, social media and constant stimulation can make it feel as though the brain is always doing something.

A sound bath deliberately creates the opposite environment.

You're lying still.

Your eyes are closed.

Nobody needs anything from you.

You don't need to answer anything.

And your attention has something simple to rest on: sound.

This can make sound healing particularly appealing to people who struggle to sit in complete silence during meditation.

Instead of trying to stop yourself thinking, you can bring your attention back to the bowls whenever your mind wanders.

What About Brainwaves and Sound Frequencies?

You'll often hear sound healing discussed alongside frequencies, Hz and brainwaves.

Hz simply means Hertz, which is a measurement of frequency — essentially how many cycles occur each second.

Different sounds have different frequencies, and singing bowls can create complex tones, harmonics and vibrations.

There is some interesting early research looking at what happens to brain activity while people listen to singing bowls. Studies have observed changes in EEG activity during singing-bowl interventions, and researchers are continuing to investigate how sound may relate to meditative and relaxed states.

However, I think it's important to separate this developing science from some of the bigger claims you'll see online.

We don't currently have good evidence that a specific frequency can, for example, heal a particular organ, cure disease or repair the body simply because it is played at a certain number of Hz.

For me, sound healing doesn't need those claims to be valuable.

If lying somewhere comfortable, listening to beautiful sounds and allowing your mind and body to slow down helps you feel calmer and more connected to yourself, that experience has value in itself.

What Are Crystal Singing Bowls?

Crystal singing bowls are generally made predominantly from quartz and create sustained resonant tones when struck or played around their rim.

The sound doesn't disappear immediately.

It travels through the space, gradually fading while another tone may begin.

When several bowls are used together, those tones interact and create the immersive soundscape associated with a crystal bowl sound bath.

You may hear both the fundamental tone of a bowl and additional harmonics, which is part of what gives singing bowls their distinctive sound.

What Are the Benefits of a Sound Bath?

People come to sound healing for many different reasons.

You might simply want an hour where you can completely switch off.

People commonly use sound baths as part of their wellbeing routine for:

Deep relaxation

Taking time away from screens and stimulation

Meditation and mindfulness

Creating space to slow down

Supporting a calmer state before sleep

Taking time for themselves

Feeling more grounded and present

Complementing yoga, massage and other wellbeing practices

Research into singing bowls has also produced some promising findings.

For example, studies have reported reductions in tension and anxiety following singing-bowl meditation, while controlled research has found physiological changes associated with an acute relaxation response.

The research is still relatively small compared with areas such as exercise, meditation or conventional healthcare, so sound healing is best thought of as a wellbeing practice rather than medical treatment.

Do I Need to Know How to Meditate?

Absolutely not.

In fact, sound healing can be particularly nice if you've tried meditation before and thought:

"I can't meditate because my brain won't shut up."

Meditation isn't really about having no thoughts.

Thoughts will come.

During a sound bath, the bowls simply give your attention somewhere to return to.

You notice yourself thinking, then bring your awareness back to the sound.

That's enough.

Sound Healing Doesn't Have to Be "Woo-Woo"

Sound healing is sometimes presented in a way that can make people think they need to believe in something before they can enjoy it.

You really don't.

You can explore the spiritual side of sound healing if that resonates with you, or you can simply experience it as deep relaxation through sound.

There doesn't need to be a bigger meaning attached to it.

Lie down.

Close your eyes.

Listen.

See how you feel afterwards.
