Deep Tissue Massage Specialist Training Day

Learn how to work deeper — without just pressing harder.

1 DAY · IN PERSON · SHIPLEY, BRADFORD · MAXIMUM 3 STUDENTS · £225

Deep tissue is one of the treatments clients ask for the most.

But deep tissue massage isn't about using as much pressure as possible.

It's about understanding what you're feeling underneath your hands, knowing how to work through the different layers of muscle and fascia, and using the right techniques to get deeper without causing unnecessary pain — or putting too much strain on your own body.

On my Deep Tissue Massage Specialist Day, I'll teach you the way I actually work with clients in my own practice.

I'm a qualified Sports Therapist as well as a massage therapist, so this course brings together massage techniques, anatomy, body mechanics and the knowledge I've gained from working with clients experiencing muscular tension, tightness and pain.

The aim is simple:

I want you to leave understanding what you're doing — not just remembering a routine.

What Is the Deep Tissue Specialist Day?

This is an intensive one-day practical training course held at my LuceZen studio in Shipley, Bradford.

The course is for people who already have a massage foundation and want to become more confident working deeper into the body.

You don't need a Level 3 qualification.

If you've completed my Complete Massage Foundation Course, or you already hold a massage certificate from another training provider, you can attend.

Your theory and anatomy are completed through home study before your training day, which means we don't waste hours of your practical day sitting around going through paperwork.

When you come into the studio, we're there to massage.

You'll watch me demonstrate, practise the techniques yourself, work on different areas of the body and receive individual corrections throughout the day.

And because there are never more than 3 students in the class, I can actually see what you're doing and spend time helping you with your technique.

Deep Tissue Isn't Just Hard Pressure

This is probably one of the biggest things I want you to understand from the course.

A client asking for a deep massage doesn't mean you need to dig your thumbs into them as hard as you can.

Working deeper takes patience, positioning, technique and an understanding of how the body responds to pressure.

Sometimes you need to slow down.

Sometimes you need to work through the more superficial tissue before you can comfortably access deeper structures.

Sometimes changing your angle or using your forearm instead of your thumbs completely changes the treatment.

I'll teach you how to feel what's happening rather than simply push harder.

What You'll Learn

Deep Tissue Massage Techniques

We'll work practically through the techniques I use within deep tissue treatments, including:

  • Slow, controlled deep tissue work

  • Working progressively through different tissue layers

  • Forearm techniques

  • Elbow techniques

  • Knuckles and reinforced hand techniques

  • Sustained pressure

  • Working with muscle and fascia

  • Adapting pressure for different clients

  • Correct positioning and body mechanics

  • Creating flow within a deep tissue treatment

  • Combining deeper techniques with your existing massage skills

You'll learn how to make a treatment feel deep and effective without making it aggressive.

Working With Different Areas of the Body

We'll spend time working on some of the areas clients most commonly want treated.

Back

Learn how to work through larger muscles of the back, recognise areas of tension and use your forearms and elbows effectively without simply forcing pressure into the body.

Neck & Shoulders

One of the most common areas of tension.

We'll look at how desk work, posture, stress and everyday movement can contribute to tightness through the upper body and how you can adapt your massage techniques accordingly.

Glutes & Hips

You'll learn how to work professionally and safely around this area, including correct positioning, communication, draping and boundaries.

Legs

We'll work through deeper techniques for the legs and look at how to use your own body weight effectively rather than exhausting your hands.

The idea isn't to give you one routine that has to be performed exactly the same way on everyone.

It's to give you a toolbox of techniques you can use depending on the person lying on your massage bed.

Protecting Your Own Body

This is a massive part of the course.

If you're going to work as a massage therapist, you need to look after yourself too.

Trying to perform deep tissue massage using your thumbs and fingers for every technique puts a huge amount of unnecessary strain through your hands, wrists and joints.

I'll show you how I use:

Forearms · Elbows · Body weight · Positioning · Movement

to create pressure without relying purely on strength.

Good body mechanics allow you to work deeply while using less effort, which is incredibly important if you're treating several clients in one day.

You should not be destroying your own body trying to fix somebody else's.

Understanding What You're Feeling

Knowing some anatomy makes you a much better therapist.

Your home-study material covers the anatomy and theory behind the techniques so that when you're working practically, you have a better understanding of what's underneath your hands.

We'll look at:

Muscles · Fascia · Deeper tissue layers · Muscle tension · Movement · Posture · Common areas of tightness · How tissue responds to pressure

You don't need to memorise every muscle in the human body before you arrive.

The aim is to help you start connecting what you've learned in theory with what you can actually feel underneath your hands.

That's where your confidence as a therapist really starts developing.

Pressure, Pain & Communication

A deep tissue treatment doesn't need to be unbearably painful to work.

And every client is different.

One person might love strong pressure while another finds the same pressure uncomfortable.

You'll learn how to communicate properly with your client throughout the treatment, check pressure levels and recognise their physical responses.

There is a difference between the sensation of working into tight tissue and pain that is telling you to stop.

As a therapist, you need to know the difference — and you need your client to feel comfortable enough to tell you.

Consultation, Contraindications & Knowing When NOT to Treat

Being able to perform a good massage is only one part of being a good therapist.

You also need to know whether the person in front of you should actually be receiving deep tissue massage.

You'll learn how to carry out a proper client consultation and understand the information you're collecting rather than treating the consultation form as something that just needs signing.

We'll cover considerations including:

Current illness · Injuries · Recent surgery · Medication · Skin conditions · Bruising · Inflammation · Pregnancy · Blood-clot concerns · Medical conditions · Pain and unexplained symptoms

Some conditions mean you shouldn't treat.

Others may mean you need to adapt the treatment, avoid a particular area, postpone the appointment or ask the client to obtain medical advice first.

If something is flagged on a client's consultation form, don't wait until they're lying on your massage bed to think about it.

Contact them before their appointment, ask for more information and decide whether it is appropriate to treat.

You'll learn how to make those decisions professionally and understand when something falls outside your scope as a massage therapist.

Maximum 3 Students

Small classes are important to me.

Massage is hands-on.

You can watch videos and read manuals, but ultimately somebody needs to watch you massage.

That's why I've reduced my specialist training days to a maximum of 3 students per class.

With three students, I can watch your:

Hand position.
Pressure.
Body mechanics.
Forearm position.
Elbow placement.
Movement around the massage bed.

If something isn't quite right, I can correct it there and then.

You also have plenty of time to practise, ask questions and actually get comfortable with the techniques.

I'd rather teach three people properly than fill a room with students.
